Every few years we see a new designer that hits the scene and wears the design crown that sees their work used throughout the world and then in come the replica’s to the rip the heart of our classic design. Weve seen it with Philippe Stark, Marcel Wander, Jaime Hayon, Tom Dixon, the list goes on and on. I guess its just part of the cycle, you design something that is practical and beautiful and the world want a piece of it…at a fraction of the price….its cruel but I can see why it happens. Its therefore bittersweet that I feel the same will happen to the ever so talented Benjamin Hubert, a young designer, age just 27 his products I could bet my top dollar (pound) that by the end of the year, we will see his works through great design shops and (sadly) in those replica ones too. His blend of natural materials, effortless curves and simple designs, make each piece clever, thoughtful and that little bit tongue in cheek. Brilliant stuff.
There are a handful of current designers that I almost become a groupy over, one of them is Matthew Hilton. I first discovered his work some years back when venturing into Heals (London design store) and sat in his now classic Balzac Chair. Comfortable and swooping, I didnt want to get up. From then, I have been keeping my ear to the ground on his work and each time he delivers. An understated design that is functional and resonates class and timeless style. His most recent work that I am suprised has not made it onto these shores, is with CASE FURNITURE, a cool, simple design offering that would fit right in to any modern infused Melbourne home. And finally, his brilliant take on the classic English Windsor Chair is just spot on. 5 varying styles designed from walnut and ash.
The War on Drugs - I Was There
I constantly emerse myself in music from the moment I awake in the morning. Its with me when I walk, run, work, drive and sleep and I cant help but feel the need to tell everyone I see about anything new I am listening to, it can annoy many. So I thought why not take it one step further and post a track as often as I can, well if its under 10MB that is…enjoy..one of my top 5 albums of last year.
My first posting as I descend in the world of blog. Where do I start? Recently returning to Melbourne after over 11 years living London, I thought it only fair to pay by respects to a city that I love and adore. When I think London, I think London underground, the veins of the city, the ever noisy, dirty, hot, muggy, selfish, lack of eye contact and speech…Whether you live in london or just visit for the day, I guarantee that you will atleast pass a tube map. Its a marvellous example of good design. Its chaotic make up gracefully swoops around on a map that takes you from one part of london to another in 2 simple steps, colour and direction of travel. Why so many are baffled by its simplicity has always baffled me..Anyhow, heres to day one of Tumblr, I hope you enjoy.
